That Old Time Religion
I heard a song on the radio,"Gimmie that old time religion, that's good enough for me". All of us have sang that song in church at one time or the other. It's a good song to sing, because there is nothing like a good ol' Holy Ghost filled fire baptized saint that shares the love of Jesus. The Holy Ghost that is in you makes you love everybody, pray and care for those in need. When dying time come it's not a funeral where it's sad, it's a celebration of the person's life and a homegoing service. That's the part of the old time religion I like.
We have some people who take that song literally. At the church they attend, it is steeped in tradition. The Holy Ghost can't get anywhere near the place, because it's good enough for me. When someone comes up with a new idea about reaching souls or having something different in the church, you hear things like, it was good enough for my mom, or grandma never done it this way. I remember coming back from Ridgecrest, North Carolina, we had had three days of trainning on how to reach today's youth for Christ. This was in the 1990's, before Facebook, texting, ect. They were talking about ways to reach young people, because many didn't grow up in church as some of us did. It's even worse now. I was all excited, and talking to my grandmother and she said "God does not change". I thought for a moment and I said "Grandma Gods word does not change, He doesn't change, but the methods of sharing the gospel does." We have to use whatever media is out there. I used to play Gospel music at a skating rink. Many people took their kids there because it was safe.
When the song talks about that old time religion, it means the way neighbors used to look after each other. When a neighbor had a need, people in the community used to help the person in need. They would watch your kids. If someone was sick, they would bring food, clean house, or do whatever was needed to help out. There is a song by the McKameys, they are just plain country people and they are anointed singers.
Dust on the Altar
Children are dying all over this land
We've lost the love for our fellow man
Greed and proud hearts have gotten in the way
There's dust on the altar, where we used to pray.
Let's seek out the old path and walk therein
Our children are dying, dying in sin
Satan is laughing while God's people stray
There is dust on the altar, where we used to pray
Tears that were once shed for a brother in need
Are now called old fashioned ,they're no longer seen
I can't remember the rest of the words, but you get the point. That old time religion, means singing the songs about the "Blood of Jesus", which he shed for us. Old time religion means calling sin, sin and preaching about Hell. Old time religion means true Godly sorrow and repentence. Not sorry that you got caught, sorry that you sinned against God. Old time religion means taking the time to pray, speading time in God's presence, seeking His face. Not just doing all of the talking, but listening to what He is saying. Old time religion means reading the Bible and praying for understanding.
There is a lost and dying world out there... we must be equipped to reach it.
