Radio Daze Chaper 2
Theresa's adventure in radio began in high school when a classmate of hers worked part time at a radio station. She would love to hear him talk about the things he did and wished she could hang out at a radio station. At this stage in the game, Theresa was too timid and shy to do such a thing. She had grown up in church, doing recitations and plays, but they were scripted and all she had to do was memorize them. She was too bashful to ever start up a conversation with someone. She dreamed of a radio career. When she told people they kind of laughed and tried to discourage her."It would be too hard", "you will never catch on" were some of the comments that she faced.
After graduating from high school someone got in touch with one of the local DJ's and asked him to call her. One day she got a call from one of them who suggested that she come by the station and talk to him. She was excited first, to get a call from him, because she had listened to him for a few years and that he had taken enough interest to give her a call. To her it was like hearing from the President. She made the appointment for that next week. She wanted to make the best impression she could, she read some things about radio . She didn't want to sound stupid. In those days there were very few role models to be inspired by. The day of the appointment she dressed in her best pantsuit and went to the radio station. The Dj was on the air and he asked her to come into the studio and watch him do a few breaks. When she walked into the studio with him and eyed all of that equipment, she wanted to turn around and leave, but she didn't. He explained what some of the the equipment was and that you could be trained use it. He said that he had got some of his trainning in the military and some at a local vocational school. He gave Theresa the name and phone number of the instructor and suggested that she give him a call.
It took a lot of nerve for Theresa to call the instructor Richard Collins. He was on the radio at one time himself and she had listened to him as well. Then she thought about all of that radio equipment. Could she learn it? She had doubts. Finally she called Mr. Collins and set up an appointment. When she met with him, Theresa didn't know for sure if she could learn what she needed to and he said "Lets give it a try". The next day she was going to Broadcasting School. The class consisted of another woman, that Theresa had known since grade school and seven or eight men. Most of them were former military. The first day, they asked her if she wanted to read a news story on air. She hesitated and then read the story. She was nervous. Most of the people in the class set out to make this shy girl welcome and feel included. It was exciting. Every day she would come home and tell her family the different things she had done and was learning.
The adventure had started . Theresa began to learn the equipment. Several of the guys would give her writing assignments to do and Mr. Collins finally assigned her to do a short two-minute human interest feature that aired on the half hour in the afternoons. Theresa would get articles from different places and rewrite them and record the feature. There were other things to do exciting things like going to court to see how a trial went and writing a story as you would report it. There were several things like ground breakings that Mr. Collins took the class to as well. Some of the guys in the class became friends and would talk to Theresa about being so shy and others being former military would say things and laugh if she blushed. There were no boyfriends then, Theresa didn't date. She was too shy, all she wanted to do was to get a job. Nothing else. She was on her way to something she wasn't even sure, but the adventure had begun...
