Radio Daze Chapter 4 - Internship
It was decided that Theresa should do an internship. One of the guys in the class had gotten a job at a local hospital in the Inservice education department, filming and writing scripts to educate the hospital on the use of new equipment. His job was to film as an instructor demonstrated the proper use of hospital equipment. As well as write press releases for the hospital and the health community to come and learn about the latest hospital. There was a call made to the school asking for an intern. Theresa was asked if she wanted to go do this. Theresa was excited and considered it an honor to be asked. She didn't know a lot about the filming part, but she was sure she could pick it up quickly. After the Christmas break she would go to school in the morning and do the internship in the afternoon.
The first day was scary and exciting all rolled into one. As she rode the elevator to the fourth floor of the hospital she wasn't really sure what to expect. The song, "There's a New Kid in Town" by the Eagles was playing in her head. People who didn't know her, expecting so much of her. When Theresa walked in she was greeted by the members of that department, shown where to hang her coat and put her purse. The supervisor had worked with her dad many years before. "Aren't you Charlies'" daughter? I worked with him at the old hospital." Theresa's dad had worked at that hospital for sixteen years. First as an orderly and later as an operating room tech. He left that job for one that paid more. The guy she went to school with, Brent, gave her a tour of the hospital, the places that she would come into contact with. The rooms where the filming took place, the supply room and other places. What they were working on was trying to instruct people on the metric system. There were mobiles and posters to fix. Theresa felt right at home with the signage and the art work. Theresa was pretty excited her first day , she couldn't wait to tell her dad. She found out she needed some new clothes as well, because the hospital had a dress code. She wanted to fit in as much as she could. She was auditioning for a job.
A few days later Brent asked Theresa to assist in filming the use of a new thermometer. One of the nurses came in and the set the lighting to film the project and it would be on video for the others to watch. She helped carry the lights and cable to the trainning room and the filming process began. The nurse demonstrated how to use the thermometer. It was a short session and then they checked to see if it recorded it did. Brent would edit the film and get it back to that department. Theresa didn't know too much about editing, but she watched with interest. Brent went ahead and edited the film, because it would take too much time to train Theresa to do it. Theresa got along with the other peole in the office. Most of them were much older than she was. The next film was how to use a striker frame bed for patients who were paralyzed. There were other instructional films made. Sometimes depending on the situation large amounts of equipment were moved to the training room. Theresa did her fair share. She was asked to come in for a full day several times, she did. During this time , it was a harsh winter and Theresa missed sometimes days in a row, because when school was not in session she was not required to report. She wanted to go anyway, but she couldn't drive in bad weather.
One the weather broke, Theresa continued her training and was sure that maybe she would get a part timr position out of this. The hospital was doing some renovations and they had to relocated the inservice department. They worked for days to move the offices from the fourth floor to the first floor. There was talk of a strike and Theresa was told not to come back until things had settled down. Theresa made several calls to see if she needed to come in and she got vague answers. It wasn't until her evaluation came back, that she got the real truth. She didn't have enough knowledge to do the job.Theresa knew this going in, but she hoped that she could learn, but Brent said he was too busy to teach her what she needed. This experience left Theresa feeling embarassed and dejected. She cried for hour, and to think she wanted to go to the hospital when shool was not in session.
Theresa's mom was upset and she set it in her mind to help Theresa get over this, by getting Theresa to write and continue with her music. This was when Theresa began to do specials on air using articles from Rolling Stone. It was fun.She would do these on Friday afternoons. This soon had a following. Which would lead her to another door.
A call was made to a local radio station asking if Theresa could come and talk to them to do some work as an intern. Mr. Collins told Theresa to take some of the material she had written with her. She did. She met with the DJ that did the morning show. He seems impressed by what she had wrote and since they were doing oldies on the weekends, they may be able to use the stuff she wrote. The only thing was that it had to be on index cards so the announcers could read it. Theresa was to start Monday and work Monday thru Thursday afternoons doing whatever was needed. It was a radio station, maybe she could get a job there on Saturday night or Sunday morning.
