Chapter 11: New Goals and Adventures
When Theresa went back to college, she had a new determination that she would succeed. She also joined Weight Watchers because during all of the drama of a relationship going wrong she had gained some weight. She was either going to make Nate wish he had held on to her or just be a force in the business world and look good doing it. By this time her sister was in college as well and they had a few classes together. Theresa was using her money that she made from work to pay for college.
Her classes were English Lit, Economics, Business Law and Biology. It was a rough schedule. At work they had changed her hours from 8AM-4PM and on Wednesdays she had a lab. It was rough because as soon as she got in from work she took a short nap, fixed something to eat and was out the door to school. At work things were getting stressful. One day she was so upset about the relationship with Nate, she forgot to sign off of the transmitter log. That was the day the FCC came in and did an inspection. Theresa got a call from work about it. She was really upset, she wasn't sure what would happen. Maybe she would just get written up or could get probation she wasn't sure. In the end she had been written up for it. It was just a reminder for her to keep her mind on her work.
At church the had a new minister of music and things began to happen there. Since Theresa was a little older she was put in charge of the Sunday Schools programs and she was doing a lot at the church. They made it seem like she was doing a bad thing by going to college. She went anyway, just participating when she could. At work they thought it was a bright idea to put in an automation system. It became know as "SAM" (sorry a** machine). It would work with the music programming, but when the preaching programs came on, if there was any pauses it would move on to the next thing. Sometimes you would have two things on the air at the same time. Eventually SAM was thrown out. SAM got the staff in trouble at times as well and it got to be the investment wasn't worth the trouble.
Theresa was doing a black gospel show and needed some help with it because it was beginning to get stale and the people she started out with had left. Her dad talked to his friend, a young minster, to come and help her with the program. It would give him a chance to preach and give her a break. This worked for a while, eventually the minister would go on to get his own radio program, eventually pastor and a lot of other great things.
During this time it was a growing time for Theresa, she went to a concert and then went to the radio station. Someone had introduced her to the group that was in concert. Later on the people from the church brought the singer up and Theresa interviewed him on air. This was the start of Theresa going to concerts and getting artist interviews. One day an up-and-coming group was passing through and wanted to stop by the radio station and Theresa agreed. When they got there she gave them a tour and they asked if she was playing their latest release and she said they were and on the shelf there was the album, it had really taken a beating. It had songs circled on it, the cover was falling apart. They get her a new copy and she did the interview. In the spring one of the churches put on a gospel sing and had nationally known groups there and Theresa's boss decided it would be a chance to go there and broadcast some of it, and get interviews from the groups there. Theresa and her boss went and got some interviews and it was the start of doing some personal appearances at local churches. Theresa loved these because she got a chance to meet listeners.
It was decided by her boss that they would make the station more appealing to advertisers by adding jingles, promos, commercials and network news. They had had it at one time but it was dropped. What they really needed was an informative entertaining morning show, like the secular stations have. Theresa knew that it would take a while to do this because for the most part as long as the preachers paid the bills no one saw a need to expand the station's horizons. It would be an uphill battle.
