Radio Daze Chapter 2 continued.... Broadcasting School
Not all of the days at the broadcasting school were good ones for Theresa. There were things that she wasn't aware of, like the reasons for the names of the shows on the air. What type of music was expected to be played. How everyone brought their own music from home and you heard a lot of things on the air that shouldn't have been. There were times where people would call and complain. When those calls came in, the students would thank them for calling and try to correct the problem. If one of the instructors got the call there was usually a yelling sesion that went on, about following the format. There was only the format for the afternoon show that was explained, it was what is now a classic rock format. The students put together certain types of programs, like the news at noon.
Theresa was busy writing the two minute features and then reading some of the news and then she was asked to to the traffic. Traffic is not traffic in dealing with cars and trucks , in radio traffic was dealing with the placement of programs and commericals. Some of this work Theresa did by hand, she had a nice printing style and she did the station logs. Some of them had to be corrected. Theresa discovered one thing, she didn't like to be yelled at. She was a timid shy girl, but if she was pushed, she would snap back. Over the course of dealing with the guys in the class teasing her and making her blush she devoloped a foul mouth. This was something that she hid from her family and the people she went to church with because it was out of character for her, but that was the only way she could shut the guys up.
During this time Theresa began to mature in thought and in actions. When she wanted to do something she made the decision to do it. She loved music all types and she would buy albums and books, by saving lunch money. She made friends with the man at the record store and he would save the old Bilboard magizenes and she devoured them. The latest trends in music, the latest equipment, that was the exciting part. She read about different music moguls who started like she did at the bottom. They emptied trash, dubbed music, and stocked records in the music library. She was hoping that someday if she worked hard enough that maybe she would get a job at a major market behind the scenes. She wanted to work midnights on the local station. That would get your foot in the door.
Theresa was a nice looking girl, she attracted male attention, some of it was unwanted because it was the wrong kind. She wanted a boyfriend by this time. She had friends, some of the guys knew that she wasn't a girl to fool around with. In the course of the class she became friends with some of the guys. They would talk about their girlfriends and Theresa took notes, when she got her boyfriend she wouldn't play games. A relationship was still a long way off still. There was a guy that had just graduated from high school, he was new in the class. His name was Dusty. She and Dusty became friends. There was a joke about someone that everybody laughed about and Dusty didn't know the person and Theresa explained to him what was going on. They became friends. They would talk and she showed him how some of the equipment worked. It wasn't a boyfriend-girlfriend relationship, just friends. Nobody believed it though. Theresa didn't, she was just glad to have someone to talk to and listen to music with.
In the fall of that year Theresa had to take math and electronics. She wasn't a good math student. She knew nothing about electronics. The only thing that she knew that you could be shocked and hurt or killed. She learned how to solder wires, but was scared to death doing it because you could get a nasty burn. She was the only woman in the class. She was learning the math skills with a calculator and help from some of the older guys she passed the classes. There were times she wanted to quit, but she knew that in order to make it she had to endure days that were less than great, teasing from classmates and people in general thinking that she couldn't do radio......
