Chapter 5 Working and going to School

Theresa's first job was not in radio as she would have liked. It was looking after two kids ages ten and seven, for a mid-wife.  She was a divorced parent who needed someone to stay at the house when she was on call. Babies are not always born in the daytime, they usually come about one or two in the morning, so she needed someone to stay with the kids in the evenings, make sure homework was done, fix dinner and get them to bed and on rare occasions, get them off to school. It turned out to be a fun job for Theresa. It was just like being at home. She could eat and sleep there and get the kids off to school and go to school herself. She got home from school before the kids did and she picked them up from school.  This job would only last a month, because Terri (the midwife) was going to have friend of her who was a nurse move in soon.

Theresa was in her last term at school. She wanted to get her two year certificate.  The broadcasting class had moved to a new studio, with rooms to learn TV as well as radio.  Since Theresa had taken over the production of the program "Black Beat", Mr. Collins wanted her to spice it up a bit. Do interviews with community leaders as well as do public affairs programming.   In class each morning, different issues were discussed and the class practiced how to do remotes and personal appearances. Theresa began to write record companies for product for the "Black Beat" program as well as call and write community leaders for the public affairs programming.  Mr. Collins told the class how to do research and contact people for certain topics.

One evening a classmate came to Theresa's house, he was going to help her study for the FCC test. He had the book, the study guide and they worked on it. Theresa's mom had a rule that there was to be no company there when parents were not home. Theresa told them of the guy Bradly who stopped by, so did the neighbors.  Bradly was a smart guy. Somewhat on the goofy side. He was sloppy and somewhat unkempt, he had a crush on Theresa.  He would take her places, to do interviews and he thought she was "Miss Brickhouse". One of the radio stations had a contest and he thought she should enter it. She got dressed and he took her to one of the places that they were judging the contest. Fortunately the ones who were supposed to judge the contest never showed up.

Theresa began to get responses to her calls about public affairs.  Her first interviews were on child abuse.  The very first one was a lady who had worked for Child Protective Services for a while and this was her first interview. It was Theresa's as well. It took longer because there were equipment problems and nerves. They finally got it done and edited down to the proper time and iot was sent to one of the local radio stations for the public affairs programs for Sunday morning.  Theresa first interview for "Black Beat" was a local radio and TV personality. Theresa and Bradly interviewed him about why more R&B music wasn't played on local radio.  This was going well.

It was time for Theresa to take the FCC exam.  This meant a field trip to the capital . Her mom and her sister drove there for some shopping as well as taking the test.  Theresa got the test and was nervous taking it.  Elements one and two were easy, but she choked when she got to element nine.  She couldn't think, the math had to be calculated by hand, and she got confused . When she turned in the test she awaited the results. She had missed five over the limit. She was crushed.  She would never get a job in radio.  She didn't have to go to Terri's to watch the kids that weekend. She was very depressed.  Her job with Terri would run out and no more spending money.  She went to Sunday School as she always did and the lesson had the verse in "For we know that all things work together for good to them that are the called according to his purpose". What did it mean how could anything good come of this?

It wasn't too long after that, Theresa got a call that would change everything, her first radio job.  Working Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. She had an interview.
