Another milestone
We paid our car off. This is a milestone and a cause for celebration, because it has been a hard road paying this off. It all started on June 30, 2006 when I found out I was going to need eye surgery for a condition called kertaconas. We had dealt with the fact that I would have the eye surgery. I was worried, because I wasn't sure if I would be able to work again. The surgery was scheduled for August 15, 2006. So most of the summer was spent worrying, and praying about the surgery.
Matt goes away in July for his Navel reserve weekend. I am at home and he usually calls. I get a call about 9:30PM that night and the first thing he says is "I'm OK'. Then he tells me about the accident he was in. He was going toward the reserve center and he drives through Nitro. It had been raining for several days and that stretch of highway drains badly. Someone going too fast for conditions passes him, and splashes him. He can't see, so the car hydroplanes, goes over a medium and spins around causing a pile up. The car was totaled, he said the passenger side was crushed in so was the trunk. I hang up the phone in shock, I walk the floor and pray and cry. Then I call my mom and dad and tell then, I was upset. Then I think about the car we had. It was a 2003 Malibu, almost paid for with a good interest rate. I knew that we wouldn't get that same rate again, because Matt had lost his job in 2004, he hadn't worked at his job no more than a year and he was making less money. They look at things like that on credit reports. I was glad he wasn't hurt. I looked through drawers for the auto insurance policy. I worked for a little while the next day and my dad told me to call Matts dad in Tennessee. I called his mom and she told me what to do about the insurance, I made the calls and the insurance called me back and we got things rolling. I called his dad and told him what happened, that Matt wasn't hurt. I talked to Matt again that night and I told him that God was looking after him. On Sunday I waiting for him to come home. One of the guys gave him a ride home. He was sort of shook up and he was sore, but just glad that I wasn't in the car. I used to sometimes go with him on reserve weekends. He called the insurance on Monday, everything was taken care of they sent an adjuster to look at the car, it was totaled. They gave us enough to pay off what we owed, plus a nice down payment. In less than a week we had a new car. God was at work here, because when I had my surgery we had to make daily trips to Charleston to the eye doctor. We didn't get the good interest rate, the payments were almost the same, but we added the GAP insurance on the car.
In 2007, I had to have another eye surgery, that when we began to struggle financially. It was OK
until Matt lost a part time job. We began to really struggle. It was hard and when I lost my job things really got rough, God pulled us through. I had to renegotiate the payments lowers which dragged the payments out longer. God was in that as well,. The milestone was reached at the end of last month. The final payment is always a little more than the regular payment is. When the title came today, I opened it up jumped up and down, thanking God that we had paid a bill off. This one especially. As I told someone, the last few years have been a struggle. God has been faithful though,. He has given us parents who helped us, Matts dad and my dad, as well as some very special friends who said the Lord placed it one their hearts to help us and they listened. When we first got the car people said some nasty things about us using money that people had give me for my surgery to buy the car with. That was not true at all, Matt has good auto insurance that he has had for a long time, they have things in his policy that they don't offer anymore. People tend to believe the worst. They jump to conclusions and believe the worst. As I said God has been so good and faithful to us, even in the midst of trouble. I can't thank Him enough.
This milestone shows me that all things are possible as you take the one day at a time trusting and believing that God is there in the day to day and He will help you. I remember when my dad paid his Rav 4 off it was such a relief. I hope that we can enjoy this for a little while as we get things straightened out.
