Dixie Farmer
One of the good things about being in radio is that you make friends. You are part of the listeners lives,. You come into their homes each day. Every morning you are in the kitchen, bedroom and even the bathroom. Wherever they have a radio. They listen to you and then they feel that they can call you with thier problems , prayer requests and sometime to just talk. That the way it was with Dixie Farmer. I really don't know when she started calling me, but we would talk about her sons, her grandchildre, her daughter that went back to school like I did. We talked about doctor's she had reccomended several doctors to me. In fact the one i am going to now, she called and helped me get in as a new patient.
I first met Dixie in person at the Beckley Beauty Acadmy. I decided to go in for a pedicure. It was a hot summer day, and the Beckley Acadmy didn't charge too much to get nails and feet done. The students needed the practice and I wanted a reasonable price to get my feet done. I was sitting upstairs waiting to get my toenails polished and there was a woman sitting there, she had had her the works her hair done . She reconized my voice, and we began to talk. Now mind you Dixie was very outspoken. You never had to guess where you stood with her. Anyway she told me who she was and we talked.
When my mother was sick, she had UMWA insurance, and she had too much stuff, so she sent her son to my dads house with a shower chair and boxes of the adult diapers. She didn't need them. The shower chair is still upstairs, we donated the adult diapers to hospice. That was a nice rthing for her to do. Then at Christmas time she made a picture plate with Our picture on it. She told me the story of her son David who had came home for Christmas of 2007. We would tlak. She always encouraged me in the ministry, while she was at heartland we went to visit, she wanted to hear me speak, so she invited me to the Farmer reunion for two years in a row. i felt kind of funny doing it, but she asked. She wanted to have a church service, the first year i kept it short, last year i sang and preachesd.
She was in the hospital and she would call me and say I don't know why the Lord hasn't called me home yet I am ready. We got up Sunday morning and Matt told me she had passed away on Saturday. Dixie finally got her wish, to be home with the Lord and her loved ones she missed so much. Going to the visittion was something, there were pictures of a full life she had led, she was surrounded by the things she liked to do in life. I talked to one of the famuily members who said that she talked about me a lot. I was humbled, I am not even related to her. I will miss Dixie, but I know where she is and as the song says "I've Got more to go to Heaven for than I did yesterday".
