Can I get out of the box now???
I have to ask a question of you. Can I get out of the box now? You are saying what do you mean. Well, here is what it means. Just because you have done something for a long period of time and you do a good job at it people tend to think that is all you can do. When you try to move on when that opportunity is not there, people won't let you, all they can think of is what you used to do or how good you were at that particular thing. This is what the entertainment world does to child stars from Shirley Temple to Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen. Some have managed to move on to other things even though their work is on films everywhere. Just think if Ron Howard hadn't been allowed to move from Opie Taylor to Ritchie Cunningham to the director he is today what a waste it would be. People like Richard Thomas who is still known as "John Boy" he has embraced this and moved on to do movies and other things. He does the voice work for Cadillac and other car dealers. I said all of that to ask , can I get out of the box now?
I was host of a morning show called "Joy In The Morning" for 25 of the 27 years it was on. This past May when the new owners took over, management decided to put news and talk on in the mornings. I realize that some of you miss the music in the mornings going to work and school. Things don't stay the same forever. I didn't make the show. It could have continued even without me back in 2010. All they had to do was voice track, but they were so interested in destroying me, that they didn't even consider their options. When the new owners took over, they wanted a presence in the Southern part of the state, so they put their state wide news on in the mornings. So what I used to do is no longer an option. I am learning and have experience doing other things. I do a lot of work behind the scenes now. I download programs and put them in the computer. So when you hear your favorite program on at the time it is scheduled to be on I may have had something to do with that. I am also in the process of redoing the music. Looking at songs and the artist that stand the test of time. During my hiatus from radio a lot of new artist have come and some of the other artist have disbanded and doing other things. So I am going through the music and looking at each song. That is a big job, but it has to be done. I am keeping stuff like the Happy Goodman's, Gaither Vocal Band and looking seriously at getting rid of some of the songs from Rachael Lampa and Aaron Wilburn. I don't think we need to hear "If My Nose Was Running Money" or "Bottled Water" from Mark Bishop. Songs that stand the test of time.
So this comes back to me. Can I get out of the box now? I am not the same person I was back then. I feel like God has given me many gifts and talents. I am still working on some with going back to school. I would like to teach and train people in business to succeed. I can do interviews and I also can place people with the things they are good at. I don't mind working in the "door of opportunity" that the Lord has given me. I will be faithful to it until He says that time is up. I just wish that the public and people at church would allow me to move in the way that God sees fit. It is scary enough to do something new without all of the haters out there judging you, without dealing with all of that. There are people that had to re invent themselves. People like Barbara Walters, while I don't agree with her politics, she is an amazing woman. She was the first news woman to earn over a million dollars in news. The first time didn't work and Harry Reasoner had something to do with that, but then she went on the re invent herself with specials and "The View". She didn't let people put her in a box by saying "You tried that news thing it didn't work so you might as well give up". Giving up is not an optuion for me. I do have limitations, I don't drive, so anytime I am invited to go somewhere, ask if I need a ride. I am a little quiet, but aware and can do things when needed. I did emcee work at the Grandstand at the State Fair. I was nervous, but I did it.
So what I want is to take some of my experience and use it in the way God wants me to. The only problem is that I have to be allowed to get out of that box everyone has put me in. Even if you choose not to let me out of my box in your mind. God has a way of breaking down walls and breaking out of boxes. You cannot put God in a box, He works in His own Way and in His own time. Just don't put Him in you bx.....
