Only here for a little while

The was a country song that said that you need to love what needs loving because we are only here for a little while.  This week I have received several calls and emails about different people I know transitioning from this life to the next one. Some of them I didn't know they were as sick as they were and others I didn't know if they were sick at all. They had overcome some obstacles with their health, but they seemed to be doing OK.

Elder David Parker was a member of Heart of God ministries, he played music,. preached, and witnessed; anywhere he could, he told people about Jesus. Elder Parker was a straight shooter with things... at times a little too straight, but he loved Jesus. He sang the song "There's Just Something About That Name". God send people like that into your life to show you what is important, how to conduct yourself and guide you in the right ways. Going to the nursing home was just part of the ministry, as well as the other things he did. In the last little while he was using a cane to get around, he called it his staff. I am sure no one would ever know how much pain he was in because he just took it. He was a person that you respected, you couldn't help it, he just had that kind of pressence about him, but he was approachable. There were several times we ministered together, at a New Years Eve service, at a Sunday evening service and at the nursing home. One evening while ministering at church his cell phone went off, it was one of his daughters calling, he tried to turn it off and she called back again. It was funny. He was a praying man and a servant of God. I am going miss him. So will our church family.

Dr. Carolyn Browning was one of my teachers. I had seen her around school, but I didn't know she was a teacher. She was a plain spoken very educated black woman. The way she talked she come from a family a lot like ours, good old-fashioned values and lots of common sense. Thats why I connected with her. At times she was a little hard to take. I had her for two classes Marketing and Management.  She made the remark, and I wasn't sure how to take it, that I could teach the class. My reply to that was maybe someday. I had experience but no degree to back it up.  Anyway when I first had her Marketing class, it was January 2011, I was still grieving over losing a job and not being able to find one. I had to give my ambitions to God and let Him take care of everything. I was filing for disability benefits and I was in a daze.  Her class was on Wednesdays and by the time, I finished her class in May , I was back to my old self, laughing and talking. I remember the first day, she knew who I was, called me a local radio personality, and I said not anymore. She had heard what had happened and as we finished class she said, you can start your own business and not even think about that place. The first day of Management class, I stayed after class and she told me how to pass one of my other classes, Business Law and the Legal Environment.  She must have heard about the exchange that I had with the teacher. I ended up getting an "A" in both classes. I know she was a minister, one of the people in her class said you sound like a preacher and some of us who knew that said she is one.

While talking about these people that God has placed in my path for a season, I come away with this, If you can help make an impact on someone's life, do it. There are so many who need a smile, a word of encouragement. It really doesn't have to be a big huge gesture, just listening helps at time. I was going for a mammogram once and the person that did it said I remember your smile. Out of hundreds of women she remembered my smile. Just a kind word to someone makes a difference, in a good day or a day when a person wants to give up.
