Radio Daze Chapter 22 Lee
Theresa was experiencing a lonely time in her life when Lee started working there. Theresa was writing in a composition romanric stories when she had some down time which usually was while she was on the air and evenings at home. The notebook went everywhere. Theresa would write things about two people coming from completely opposite ends of the spectrum, meeting and falling in love, despite the many obstacles put in the way. Some of this ended up being partly true, in Theresa's life. She had just strated a story about a woman who was busy with her caeer meeting a man through work and all of the ups and downs it caused.
When Lee came to work that day and he was introduced as the assistant engineer, Theresa wondered in her heart if he could be the one. He was nice looking, sort of a nerd, but not really. He wore glasses and had the shirt with the pens in the pockets, , kind of a geek, but very nice to look at. At first Lee was very quiet, he didn't talk about himself at all. He just did his job and left. It wasn't until the company Christmas party that Theresa found out he had a girlfriend. This was during one of the times that Nate had tried to come back in her life and she didn't really pay a lot of attention to Lee. She just noticed he was startuing to come out of his shell a little. Later Theresa would find out that his quietness was partly he had just gotten out of active duty military and went to reserves and he wanted to watch his mouth knowing that there were people coming in to do Christian programs.
Theresa kept trying to talk to Lee, but it was like trying to kick a door in. One day Theresa was talking about her high school and the reunion that was coming up, so she took her high school yearbook to work and Lee saw it. He began to tease her about knowing how old she was. One day Lee came in upset, and he began talking about his grandmother. He spent a lot of time with her helping plant her garden, and sometimes coming over on the weekends to watch "Little Joe" on TV. He spent every Sunday with her. She had had a stroke and he was upset aboout it. They began to talk about their grandmothers, he told the story about one of his brothers smarting off at his grandmother and running away and his grandmother hit him in the back of the head with a brick. Theresa had to laugh, because that sounded a lot like one of her grandmothers. Theresa would eat lunch in the lunch room with one of her friends and Lee would be there working, it got to the point where he would join them just for the conversation.
Lee wanted to make some extra money, so he wanted to learn how to work an airshift. Theresa began to train him and as she did she got to know all about him. He had been active duty in the military, he came here to help his mom out. She was divorced after being married for thirty years. She had moved back to West Virginia, and since Lee was singkle he had moved here to help her. By the time Lee and Theresa became friends, his girlfriend had moved away and they had broke up. Lee said jhe just didn't know what the ladies wanted so he didn't want to be bothered with having a girlfriend. Theresa had eyes for him, but she wasn't sure how to approach him. She asked some of her co-workers which in some cases turned out to be a mistake. One did suggest to invite him over to do a repair or something. So Theresa asked him over to install a phone in her TV room. When Lee arrived he was nervous, Theresa was wondering why. She thought he had seen too many of those movies on TV where someone calls a repair man and the woman seduces him.
Theresa began to really like Lee. Again she asked some of the ladies she worked with how to get his attention. It was time for the company Christmas party and she asked him if he had a date. He didn't so she suggested since she didn't have a date and he didn't have a date, they should go together. He seemed to like the idea. He came to the door to pick her up, kind of like a real date. Most of the time when people came to pick Theresa up they just blew the horn. He came to the door. A real gentleman she though, they talked on the way about Christams music. She had been in school and church chiors and knew a lot of Christmas music. He was playing the Manhiem Steemrollers in the car and she began to sang to the music and he asked her how did she know the music and she told him that she had been in chiors since age 10 and she knew a lot of music. When they reached the party, some people were surprised that they came together. Some of the guy came to the table to sat with them, and then they tried to get him to leave the party and go out with them later. They were trying to get him to dump Theresa and go out with them. He wouldn't do it. Theresa really appreciated that. He told them that he was with me and wasn't going to leaven, then they tried to suggest that Theresa drank. She didn't dran , all she had was iced tea. One the way home they talked about the evening and Theresa told him how much she appreciated him, not leaving her to find a way home. He asked "What kind of person wouyld do something like that". Theresa had known some that had done that and embarassed her. She invited him in, but he left and went home. For about six months there were dates like that. During the spring their first real date was to go and buy plants and things . He liked to plant a garden and she always planted flowers. She said, why don't we go pick up our garden supplies together. They did and laughed and talked and had a good time. Theresa really liked him and he liked her, but didn't know if he should persue a realationship, because he wasn't working full time, he had moved here to help his mother and didn't have a place of his own.
During this time, someone tried to do another fix up and There had, had enough, she really liked Lee and one day she saw him and she said that she needed to talk to him. But not at work. So he stopped by her house to look at her TV. Something was messed up with it. After he looked at it he asked what she wanted to talk about. Theresa didn't want to be too forward, but she said that she really liked him. More than a friend. He looked amazed, he wanted to kiss he, but they both were nervous, and he said that he had been lonely, and this wqas more than he could have hoped for. The courtship had began, there wasn't much money to date with, so some of their date were watching TV , going to Tamerack looking around. He ehelped her move furniture when she redone the TV room and with different things around the house. They got to know each other and he must have told his mother about Theresa, because she was invited to Christmas dinner. Getting invited to meet the parents was a big deal to Theresa, she wanted to dress right, but not overdress and wanted to make an impression so she took a gift. The dinner went rally well.
At work they tried not to bring the relationship there. They tried to be suttle. It didn't work someone had drove by Theresa's house and saw Lee's car there and there were a lot of rummors. People were wondwering about them. Some of them didn't like the relationship, some of the women tried to flirt with Lee, but he didn't have anything to do with them. He even went as far as to cuss someone out. It seemed to both of them that it was OK to have an affair, but a serious relationship that was another story.
Lee and Theresa dated for almost a year when he had to go away for training for three months. Theresa was scared, because this was a turning point . This would either make or break the relationship. She cried when he left andworried. A few days later, he called her giving her a phone number where she could reach him. When she hung up she changed her phone plan to 10 cents a minute. He would call each night at 10PM, sometimes she called him. She had lunch with a friend who said, he is missing you thats why he is calling. The phone bills were high. When he got back, he came over and they talked and he said I missed you. He began to ry to get things done and work more. On her birthday he gave her an engagement ring.
As things got closer between them, things escaleted at work, things got very difficult for Theresa. She was called into the office for minor things and the word got out that some in management were not happy with thier relationship. There was no ploicy, it had been changed early Lee and Theresa began to make wedding plans. Theresa wanted a nice low key wedding. She realizeed that hse still had house payments and bills to pay. The wedding would be special , but not expensive, thanks to Theresa's friends.
When looking back Theresa still is in awe over the events that happened during that time. Therea and Lee would be married and live an interesting life with many twists and turns, but they would face them together..
