Remembering Brian Fox
On Monday morning, I got the shock of my life. I heard that Brian Fox has passed away. Apparently he died in his sleep. I had just talked to him about three weeks ago. He was working for Southern Communications and he came to borrow something from Randy Kerbway . It was good to see him. He looked good. All of us are older now, so we have a mature quality about us. I was sad I didn't know the man he had become.
I met Brian in 1990, during the time of "the switch". He was hired as the midnight guy. I was a little upset, because they had hired someone to do overnites and I hadn't met them. I wanted to meet them, because they would also be taking care of the station I was in charge of. He came up for a staff meeting. He came to introduce himself to me and we talked. I think he was about seventeen. He had a lot on the ball for being so young. As I got to know Brian, I found I really liked him. He was funny, he did all the stupid things someone his age would do, but I still really liked him. I met some of his girlfriends and I knew that on weekends he partied, but as I said I still liked him. I have to keep saying this, because I am and was back then a Christian. Some at the radio station thought that I was judgmental. I really wasn't, I just didn't drink or party. I had my own reasons for not doing any of that. First I was a Christian, before I totally quit trying to fit in, I didn't drink that because I didn't like the idea of losing control of my surroundings. If I wanted to act silly, I wanted it to me acting silly, not something I drank or took.
If you working with Brian on holidays, which I did on Thanksgiving and Christmas a few years, you always got a full course meal. His mom used to bring dinner for him and whoever else was working. She brought plates napkins and a full course meal. I really enjoyed those dinner. Sometimes that would be the only Holiday meal I would get. We worked weekends together, it was fun. There were a lot of crazy things he showed me with the equipment. He went to Kansas to train with Computer Concepts and learn all about the DCS which we were using at the time. While he was there, he applied for a job. When he came back, we talked about the fact that he was leaving. I looked at it this way and told him that if he didn't take the opportunity, he would kick himself years later. So he left and of course it opened up a new world for him.
Some of the funny things I remember was his advice to me, when I was interested in Matt. I can't repeat what he told me, but it was funny. He did "Joy In the Morning" a couple of times. He tried to do everything like I would do it and it sounded funny. We would do a break together on some mornings. Once he was talking about using raw eggs and my pastor called and was teasing him about it. Brian had come in on Sunday mornings after a wild night Bishop never said anything about it, he just knew and was always nice to him. When Brian would give you a wake up call it was funny. You would hang up the phone laughing. Once my heat went out and this was before I got married, I stayed with my parents. I called Brian and told him to give me a wake up call. So at 4AM the phone rings . I picked it up, so did my mom and Brian said, "Rise up and Walk" and my mom said something about it being too early she didn't want to rise, I just starting laughing and hung up.
When I saw him a few weeks back, I reminded him of something that he promised that he would do. When Heart of God first moved to its present location, he had promised Bishop that he would come to church. I told Brian I would go with him, so he wouldn't be nervous. We had planned to go one Sunday, but something happened and we didn't get to go, but I reminded him of that a few weeks back,. I am sorry he didn't get to do that. As Jerri Miller Skaggs said "You don't know where death is, so make sure that you accept Jesus in your life". I couldn't agree more. We all will miss you Brian.
